Are you having a fall or winter wedding but you fell in love with a sleeveless wedding dress? Or maybe you’re having a religious ceremony and bare arms are considered inappropriate for the venue. What to do? Give up the dress of your dreams for something more appropriate for cooler weather or religious beliefs? Move your wedding date to another season or location? Of course not! All you need to do is don a beautiful shawl or shrug and you can walk down the aisle in the dress of your dreams.
Material Shawls can be made of any kind of fabric, but most brides usually wear satin, lace or tulle shawls. If you need help deciding whether a shawl’s material is suitable for a wedding, simply ask yourself, “Would someone make a wedding dress or embellish a wedding gown from this material?” If the answer is no, move along. Fall and winter brides will need a bit more warmth and coverage, and faux fur, velvet and even tweed are great options. Imagine what fabric you would wear if you were getting married at a luxurious ski chalet and go from there.
How to Wear A Shawl
Draped around the shoulders - This is the most classic way to wear a shawl. Simply drape it around your shoulders and tie it in an elegant knot in the back. This style gives your hands freedom to participate in the ceremony and you get to stay warm.
Fastened in the front with a pin – This style is similar to the one above, only you wrap the shawl back to front and then use a beautiful pin to act as a clasp. We especially love this look for brides and bridesmaids that have stunning vintage brooches at their disposal. Show those beautiful brooches off!
Alternatively, you can opt to wear a shrug instead of a shawl, which is an easier way to keep yourself warm. They come with sleeves and a back, which means you can transform your dress from a ceremony-appropriate style to reception-ready in seconds. All you have to do is remove the shrug and you’re good to go.
Keeping warm or following religious guidelines during your wedding doesn’t have to be a challenge. There are some great options available that will look great when paired with your gorgeous gown. Happy hunting!
